Rowing

I graduated from Harvard College in 1968, and rowed as a member of the Harvard College Crew and of the 1968 US Olympic Team, placing sixth. My five fellow oarsmen and I were among the only white Olympic athletes to voice our support of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, the movement that led to the victory-stand salutes of Tommie Smith and John Carlos in Mexico City. Our public statement was featured in the recent HBO documentary Fists of Freedom.

One of the attractions of this ride for me is that I will be able to show Randy the Blue Mesa Reservoir in Colorado. This reservoir, at approximately 7500 feet elevation, was the site of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Rowing Team's high-altitude training camp, where our team spent three weeks before going to Mexico City.
